Ludwig ‚Lale‘ Eisenberg (später Sokolov) ist 26 Jahre alt, als er am 23.4.1942 im KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau ankommt.Der junge Mann ist Jude aus der heutigen Slovakei und hat sich auf Grund des Aufrufs der Nazis für einen ‚Arbeitseinsatz‘ gemeldet.Lale verbindet damit die Hoffnung, dass seine Familie durch sein Opfer sicher ist.Was ihn in Auschwitz erwartet, weiß er nicht. Durch die schwere Arbeit und die katastrophalen Bedingungen im KZ erkrankt Lale an Typhus, überlebt jedoch wegen der Fürsorge anderer Insassen zu denen auch Pepan der Tätowierer von Auschwitz gehört.Pepan nimmt Lale unter seine Fittiche und so wird Lale erst zum Gehilfen und nach einigen Wochen selbst zum Tätowierer von Auschwitz, als Pepan verschwindet…Als geschichtsinteressierte Deutsche bin ich am Holocaust natürlich nicht vorbei gekommen, ich habe also alle möglichen Dokus gesehen, Bücher gelesen und Filme gesehen, was dann wiederum zu angeregten Diskussionen im Umfeld geführt hat.Trotzdem ist ‚The Tattooist of Auschwitz‚ für mich der erste Roman, der im wohl bekanntesten KZ überhaupt angesiedelt ist.Heather Morris schafft es anschaulich und auch für mich als Nicht-Muttersprachler gut verständlich zu schildern, wie Lales Alltag aussieht.Dabei sollte man zwar nicht vergessen, daß das nicht ganz exemplarisch für normale KZ-Häftlinge ist, weil Lale durch seine Arbeit einige Vergünstigungen in Anspruch nehmen kann, aber ich finde man bekommt einen guten Einblick und auch einige Hintergrundinformationen. Zum Beispiel erklärt Morris das farbige Markierungssystem für die verschiedenen Häftlingsgruppen.Trotzdem hat man hier definitiv kein Sachbuch in der Hand, aber die Autorin geht für meine Begriffe sorgfälltig mit Lales Geschichte um, wird nie effektheischend und auch die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Lale und seiner großen Liebe Gita driftet weder ins Kitschige ab, noch nimmt sie zu viel Raum ein.Interessant fand ich die aufgeworfene Frage, ob Lale sich als Tätowierer der Kollaboration schuldig gemacht hat.Dafür liefert Morris keine Antwort, der Leser kann also selbst für sich entscheiden, ob Lale sich schuldig gemacht hat oder ein Held ist, weil er Mithäftlingen Lebensmittel besorgte und auch dem ein oder anderen das Leben rettete (ich habe darauf übrigens noch keine Antwort gefunden).Sie schildert Lale allerdings für mich als sehr sympathischen Mann, den ich gerne kennen gelernt hätte und dem ich dankbar dafür bin, dass er nach langen Jahren des öffentlichen Schweigens doch noch seine Geschichte erzählt hat, damit wir nie vergessen!Der Schauspieler Richard Armitage ist für das Hörbuch sehr gut ausgewählt. Seiner angenehmen Stimme kann ich hier wunderbar folgen und dadurch, dass ich sie mittlerweile relativ gut kenne, verstärkt sich der ein oder andere Gänsehautmoment, denn einen meiner Lieblingsschauspieler zum Beispiel ‚Arbeit macht frei‘ sagen zu hören, war definitiv befremdlich.Obwohl Armitage auch für diese Lesung verschiedene Stimmen und Akzente nachahmt, ist seine Performance ein wenig zurückhaltender als man das von seinen anderen Hörbüchern gewohnt ist und auch das hat mir gut gefallen, weil es für das ernste Thema angemessen scheint.Er unterstützt mit seiner Performance die Stimmung des Buches ganz wunderbar und transportiert großartig Lale’s Empfindungen, Gedanken und Stimmungen.Aber auch Gita und all den anderen Personen haucht Armitage Leben ein und die von Heather Morris aufgeschriebene Geschichte bekommt dadurch noch einmal mehr Eindringlichkeit.Die deutschen Eigennamen oder den ein oder anderen eingestreuten deutschen Satz bekommt er als Nicht-Mutterspracher nicht zu hundert Prozent, aber doch zufriedenstellend hin, zumal zum Beispiel ‚Johann Schwarzhuber‚ auch nicht der einfachste Name der Welt ist, wenn man ihn als Brite aussprechen muss.Was mich aber zugegebenermassen vielleicht unfairerweise gestört hat, war Armitages Aussprache von Lale und Mengele.Für die Aussprache von Mengele dürfte es genug Tonbeispiele geben, damit ein halbwegs begabter Schauspieler das richtig hinbekommt, von daher ist das für mich einfach ein wenig ärgerlich.Ob RAs Lale wirklich falsch ist, kann ich gar nicht sagen, aber ich assoziiere mit dem Namen die Aussprache von ‚Lale Andersen‚ und Lale selbst spricht es eher ‚Laley‘ aus, von daher bin ich beim Hören leider immer wieder über den Namen gestolpert.Aber das ist wirklich nur ein kleiner Kritikpunkt an einem ansonsten gelungenen Hörerlebnis, das ich auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen möchte.Für mich war ‚The Tattooist of Auschwitz‘ nämlich insgesamt mehr als lesens- bzw- anhörenswert und ich würde mich freuen, wenn der ein oder andere vielleicht dadurch Zugang zu einem historischen Thema bekommt, den es vorher noch nicht gab.Ob es für Menschen, die sich sehr intensiv mit Auschwitz auseinandergesetzt haben, noch viel Neues zu erzählen mag, kann ich allerdings nicht sagen.Weitere Anmerkungen:Am Ende des Hörbuches gibts es unter anderem die Schilderung der Autorin zum ersten Treffen mit Lale (authors note), zusätzliche Information zu einzelnen Personen und ein Nachwort von Lales Sohn Gary.Die Schnitte des Hörbuchs klingen manchmal etwas unsauber. Das habe ich so bei Audible noch nie erlebt, aber ich bin wie gesagt auch kein Hörbuch-Spezialist.Die deutsche Druckausgabe des Romans ist übrigens für Herbst 2018 angekündigt

After some days waiting he is transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, today the synonym with Nazi cruelty. He soon attracts attention due to his knowledge of several languages and his ability to cope with people. He becomes the tattooist of Auschwitz, the person who replaces the peoples’ names with a number on their wrist. Lale’s extraordinary capabilities make him wander between the lines, on the one hand, he serves the Nazis, on the other, he supports the Jews and gypsies in the camp. When He first sees Gita, he completely falls for her. But a concentration camp is not the best scenery for a love story, especially since you never know if you will die tomorrow.Heather Morris has written a compelling story in one of the most awful places the Nazi regime has created. Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration camp where more than one million persons found death during the second world war and where Josef Mengele carried out is gruesome experiments, is today a museum and remembrance site which aims at preventing such a thing from happening ever again.The story is based on the narration of the real Lale Eisenberg who later called himself Sokolov when he, after surviving the Holocaust, started a new life first in Slovakia and then Australia. It is incredible to read about his life in the camp, especially considering the fact that he as a kind of collaborator was relatively well off. Those who are burnt in the gas chambers, those who fell prey to Menegle’s experiments and all the ones who died from hunger or illness are only on the fringes of the story. So after all, we actually get one of the happier sides of being held prisoner under unimaginable conditions even though this one isn’t free of tragedy either.But it is not only the story itself which is moving, it is also the author’s style which makes the book stand out. Most of the narration is in chronological order, only towards the end Lale has some kind of flashbacks of the time before he came to the camp. He never would have guessed that they were in real danger, that Hitler would invade Slovakia and certainly not all that he sees in Auschwitz. Morris makes the reader actually feel what Lale feels, quite often his emotions are palpable which makes the story go deep inside you. Especially in the moments when he is separated from Gita or close to death.Since it is based on a true story, this is certainly a life which needed to be told and which should be read about widely.
